Cognitive Decline Prevention & Healthspan Optimization

As life expectancy increases, maintaining cognitive health and optimizing healthspan—the years of life lived in good health—has become a crucial focus for modern medicine. Cognitive decline, characterized by memory loss, reduced problem-solving abilities, and diminished focus, is a growing concern for many aging individuals. However, cognitive decline is not inevitable. Through proactive strategies that address its root causes, it is possible to preserve brain health, enhance mental clarity, and enjoy a fulfilling, vibrant life well into the later years.

At Caring for the Body, we specialize in cognitive decline prevention and healthspan optimization, offering integrative and evidence-based approaches to help individuals achieve their wellness goals.

The Concept of Healthspan vs. Lifespan

Lifespan refers to the total number of years a person lives, while healthspan emphasizes the years lived in good physical, mental, and emotional health. While many medical advances have increased lifespan, extending healthspan ensures those additional years are lived with vitality, independence, and purpose.

Cognitive health is a cornerstone of healthspan. As the brain controls all bodily functions and impacts quality of life, preserving its function is essential for a long and rewarding life.

Understanding Cognitive Decline

Cognitive decline is not limited to severe conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia—it also includes subtler changes that interfere with daily activities and reduce quality of life. These changes often begin decades before symptoms become apparent, making early prevention critical.

Key signs of cognitive decline include:

  • Difficulty remembering names, dates, or recent events
  • Struggling to learn new skills or retain information
  • Poor focus or difficulty concentrating
  • Slower problem-solving and decision-making
  • Reduced ability to multitask
  • Increased reliance on memory aids

Root Causes of Cognitive Decline

Cognitive decline arises from a combination of genetic, biological, and lifestyle factors. Understanding and addressing these factors can slow or even reverse its progression:

  1. Chronic Inflammation:
Systemic inflammation damages neurons and disrupts communication between brain cells. Chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders can exacerbate this process.
  2. Oxidative Stress:
An imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants accelerates cellular aging, contributing to brain damage.
  3. Nutritional Deficiencies:
Inadequate levels of essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, vitamin D, and magnesium impair brain health and cognitive function.
  4. Poor Lifestyle Choices:
Sedentary behavior, poor diet, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress negatively affect brain health over time.
  5. Toxin Exposure:
Heavy metals, environmental pollutants, and mold exposure contribute to neuroinflammation and cognitive decline.
  6. Hormonal Imbalances:
Hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol play a significant role in brain health, and imbalances can impair memory and focus.

Strategies for Cognitive Decline Prevention

Eat a nutrient-dense diet for brain health

Preventing cognitive decline requires a proactive, multi-faceted approach that combines lifestyle changes, targeted therapies, and ongoing support. At Caring for the Body, we offer evidence-based strategies to help individuals preserve brain health and optimize their healthspan.

1. Nutrition for Brain Health
A nutrient-dense diet is foundational for preventing cognitive decline. Key dietary principles include:

  • Anti-inflammatory Foods: Leafy greens, berries, fatty fish, and nuts reduce inflammation and support neuronal health.
  • Healthy Fats: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, improve brain function and memory.
  • Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Colorful fruits and vegetables combat oxidative stress and protect brain cells.
  • Blood Sugar Regulation: Maintaining stable blood sugar levels through whole foods and balanced meals reduces the risk of brain damage caused by glucose spikes.

2. Physical Activity and Brain Resilience
Regular exercise enhances brain health by:

  • Increasing blood flow and oxygenation to the brain
  • Promoting the growth of new neurons through brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)
  • Reducing stress and inflammation

Aerobic activities, strength training, and mindfulness exercises like yoga or tai chi are particularly beneficial for cognitive health.

3. Cognitive Stimulation and Mental Fitness
Engaging the brain regularly through stimulating activities preserves neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to adapt and form new connections. Recommended activities include:

  • Learning new skills or languages
  • Playing strategy-based games or solving puzzles
  • Reading and engaging in meaningful conversations
  • Exploring creative outlets like art or music

4. Stress Management
Chronic stress accelerates cognitive decline by increasing cortisol levels, which damage neurons over time. Stress reduction techniques include:

  • Mindfulness meditation
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation

5. Sleep Optimization
Sleep is essential for brain detoxification, memory consolidation, and emotional regulation. Tips for better sleep include:

  • Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule
  • Avoiding screens and stimulants before bed
  • Creating a calming bedtime routine

6. Addressing Toxins and Inflammation
Reducing exposure to environmental toxins and supporting the body’s detoxification processes are critical for brain health. Strategies include:

  • Using air purifiers and water filters to minimize toxin exposure
  • Incorporating detox-supporting foods like cruciferous vegetables, garlic, and turmeric
  • Advanced testing for heavy metals, mold, and chemical sensitivities

7. Hormonal Balancing Balancing hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol enhances memory, focus, and mood. Hormonal optimization may involve lifestyle changes, bioidentical hormone therapy, or targeted supplementation.

8. Advanced Therapies at Caring for the Body
At Caring for the Body, we utilize innovative approaches to support cognitive health and healthspan optimization:

  • Neurofeedback Therapy: Training the brain to self-regulate and improve focus, memory, and emotional resilience.
  • Personalized Nutrition Plans: Addressing specific deficiencies and sensitivities to enhance brain function.
  • Detoxification Programs: Removing environmental toxins that contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Genetic Testing: Identifying predispositions and tailoring prevention strategies to your unique genetic profile.

The Importance of Healthspan Optimization

While extending lifespan is a medical achievement, optimizing healthspan ensures that additional years are filled with vitality, independence, and joy. Focusing on cognitive health allows individuals to maintain their independence, deepen relationships, and continue pursuing meaningful activities.

Caring for the Body’s integrative approach empowers individuals to take charge of their brain health and overall well-being, offering a path to not only live longer but to live better.

What does “Faith-Based” mean in the Re‑Think Aging Community?

Our program is rooted in a Christian understanding of health, wholeness, and human flourishing. We believe that God’s fingerprints are clearly visible in all of creation, especially in the design of our human bodies, and that caring for our bodies is a form of worship and stewardship.

Being faith-based means that we integrate prayer, Scripture, and spiritual reflection into our approach to health and longevity, always in a way that is compassionate, invitational, and never coercive. We honor each person’s unique journey with God.

Are Your Teachings Based in a Specific Christian Tradition?

I (Dr. Libert) am a non-denominational Christian. My faith is centered on Jesus Christ and the historic teachings of the universal Christian church as expressed in the Nicene Creed (see below). Our community is intentionally open to believers from all denominational backgrounds—Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox—as well as those who may not identify with a particular tradition but are open and seeking God.

We hold to the ancient Nicene Creed, which unites Christians across history and denominations.

In the first three centuries after Christ, the church often had to meet in secrecy and live in seclusion due to periods of persecution. During that time, significant theological debates arose—particularly about the true nature and divinity of Jesus Christ.

When Emperor Constantine gained control of the Roman Empire in 312 A.D., he granted Christianity favored status. Soon, he recognized how divided the church was over key doctrines. To promote unity, he called together a council in the city of Nicaea in the year 325 A.D.

From that historic gathering came the Nicene Creed, a clear statement of Christian belief that has endured as a guiding standard for many Christian churches throughout the centuries.

The version shared below is the 1975 ecumenical text produced by the International Consultation on English Texts (ICET) and published in Prayers We Have in Common. When the creed refers to “the holy catholic Church,” it is speaking of the universal body of Christ’s followers, not any particular denomination.

Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

* The term “catholic church” refers to the universal church (from the Greek katholikos, which usually means “general” or “universal”).

Do I need to be a Christian to join?

No. While the program is faith‑informed and Christ‑centered, we welcome anyone who is curious, open, or seeking. Many of our members share a desire to grow spiritually, emotionally, and physically. You are warmly invited to participate at the level that feels authentic to you.

What are the basics of your faith statement?

Here are a few of our core beliefs that shape the Re‑Think Aging Community, along with Scripture references that ground these truths:

God’s fingerprints are clearly visible in all of creation, especially in our bodies.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20)

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14)

The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we are called to be good stewards of our health.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)

We can experience abundant life through our union with Jesus Christ and participation in the life of the Triune God.

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.” (John 15:4)

Salvation is a free gift from God.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)

God uses all circumstances—our greatest tragedies, losses, and pain—to shape us into the image of His Son.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” (Romans 8:28–29)

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” (James 1:2–3)

The Holy Spirit transforms us by the renewing of our minds.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)

There is a soul rest waiting for us when we walk with and learn from Jesus.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28–29)

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.” (Hebrews 4:9–10)

No. While the program is faith‑informed and Christ‑centered, we welcome anyone who is curious, open, or seeking. Many of our members share a desire to grow spiritually, emotionally, and physically. You are warmly invited to participate at the level that feels authentic to you.

What if I have more questions?

Please feel free to reach out. I would be honored to share more about my faith, our community, and how we integrate spiritual practices with evidence-based functional medicine to help you flourish in mind, body, and spirit.

What if I want to add on the TruHealth test in addition to the TruAge test that comes with the program?

Absolutely—you can! Your Re-Think Aging Community membership already includes the TruAge test from TruDiagnostic, which measures your biological age and provides powerful insights into how your lifestyle is influencing your aging process.

If you’d like to take things a step further, you can elect to add on the TruHealth test and pay only the difference in cost. The TruHealth test expands on your TruAge results by giving you a more comprehensive picture of your wellness markers, including inflammation, immune function, and other key healthspan indicators.

We love when members choose to add this—it’s like upgrading from a snapshot to a full panoramic view of your health, empowering you to make even more targeted, effective changes. You can learn more about TruHealth here: TruDiagnostic.

Why You Might Want to Add TruHealth

If your goal is to protect your brain, extend your healthspan, and live with vibrant energy for decades to come, more data can mean more precision in your plan. While TruAge tells you how you’re aging at the cellular level, TruHealth reveals why.

This expanded panel measures additional biomarkers linked to inflammation, immune resilience, and metabolic health—all of which play a pivotal role in cognitive vitality, hormonal balance, and disease prevention. With both tests, you’ll have a clearer map of where you are now and exactly which levers to pull to move toward your best possible future.

It’s like having both the “big picture” and the “fine print” of your health story—so you can take action with confidence and faith-aligned purpose.

Do you offer a discount for my spouse, significant other, or a friend?

Yes! We love seeing people walk this journey together. When you share the experience—whether with your spouse, significant other, or a close friend—you gain built-in accountability, shared learning, and the joy of supporting each other’s growth in both health and faith.

To make that easier, we offer 25% off the second membership when you and your spouse, significant other, or friend join at the same time. That’s a savings of up to $437.50 for the year.

Why do we do this? Because research shows that when lifestyle and mindset changes are made together, they’re more likely to last—and the benefits ripple into every area of life. This discount is our way of investing in your shared journey toward living well, living faithfully, and finishing strong, together.
