Osteoporosis Prevention
Protect your bones. Preserve your strength. Prevent fractures.
Bone loss is often silent, until it isn’t. A wrist fracture, a “minor” fall that becomes a hip fracture, a gradual loss of height or posture. These can be life-changing events, especially in midlife and beyond.
At Caring for the Body, PLLC – Center for Functional Medicine, we take a proactive, root-cause approach to osteoporosis prevention. That means we look far beyond a single bone density number and ask the deeper question:
Why is your body losing bone, and what will it take to rebuild resilient structure?
We blend evidence-based screening with functional medicine strategy so you can protect your independence, mobility, and long-term vitality.
Why bone health matters
Strong bones are not just “calcium storage.” They are living tissue, continuously remodeled under the influence of hormones, muscle force, nutrition, inflammation, gut health, and more.
Osteoporosis is largely preventable, and early action matters. Screening recommendations support assessing fracture risk and bone density in appropriate populations, especially women 65+ and postmenopausal women at increased risk.
Our functional medicine approach
Traditional care often starts after bone loss is already advanced. We prefer to intervene earlier, using a comprehensive prevention strategy tailored to your biology and risk profile.
We evaluate the key drivers of bone loss, including:
- Hormone shifts (especially perimenopause/menopause, low testosterone, thyroid imbalance)
- Inflammation and metabolic health (insulin resistance, chronic inflammatory patterns)
- Nutrient status (vitamin D and minerals needed for bone formation and remodeling)
- Muscle and movement patterns (strength, balance, fall risk, and the “use it or lose it” signals bones need)
- Digestive and absorption issues (low stomach acid, gut inflammation, malabsorption)
- Medication contributors (for example, long-term glucocorticoids and other common prescriptions that can impact bone density)
- Lifestyle factors (sleep, alcohol, smoking, chronic stress physiology)
Who we help
This service is a great fit if you:
- Are 40+ and want to prevent bone loss before it starts
- Are in perimenopause or menopause and want a wise, preventative plan
- Have osteopenia, a family history of osteoporosis, or a prior low-trauma fracture
- Have risk factors such as low body weight, nutrient deficiencies, thyroid issues, history of steroid use, or digestive disorders
- Want prevention that includes exercise strategy, nutrition, labs, and targeted supplementation, not just “take calcium”
What your osteoporosis prevention visit may include
Your care plan is individualized, but commonly includes:
1) Risk assessment that is actually personal
- Detailed history, fracture risk factors, falls risk, body composition, nutrition, and training habits
- When appropriate, we integrate standard fracture risk tools and help coordinate bone density testing (DXA) through local imaging resources
2) Root-cause lab evaluation (when indicated)
We focus on the “why” behind bone loss, which may include markers related to:
- Vitamin and mineral status (including vitamin D)
- Thyroid and sex hormones
- Inflammation, metabolic health, and protein adequacy
- Secondary contributors (as clinically appropriate)
3) A prevention plan you can execute
You leave with a clear plan that may include:
- Nutrition strategy for bone building (protein sufficiency, mineral density, smart supplementation when needed)
- Exercise prescription focused on bone-signaling movement: resistance training, safe impact where appropriate, posture and balance training
- Fall prevention guidance (one of the most powerful fracture-prevention tools)
- Medication and supplement review through a bone-health lens
- Follow-up options to track progress and adjust intelligently over time
Exercise is medicine for your skeleton
Bones respond to mechanical load. That is why weight-bearing activity and muscle-strengthening exercise are repeatedly emphasized in major bone health resources.
If you feel unsure where to start, you are not alone. We help you choose the safest, most effective next step based on your current strength, balance, and bone status.
A wise, balanced view of medication
Some patients benefit from medication to reduce fracture risk, especially in higher-risk categories. When that conversation is relevant, we can help you understand options and coordinate with your prescribing clinician. Current specialty guidelines emphasize matching therapy to fracture risk and individual clinical context.
Our aim is never fear-based care. It is informed, personalized, and prevention-forward.
Ready to protect your future mobility and independence?
If you want a proactive plan to strengthen your bones and reduce your fracture risk, we would be honored to help.
