In this episode I discuss root causes of hypothyroidism and the holistic treatment options to optimize thyroid health, improve metabolism, and decrease autoimmunity for a higher quality of life. Here are some of the root causes of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis: Environmental toxicity: (e.g. heavy metals, industrial chemicals/organic pollutants, fluoride in the water), dietary factors: food sensitivity (e.g. gluten due to molecular mimicry), micronutrient deficiencies from poor diet, malabsorption and soil mineral depletion (e.g. iodine, zinc, iron, B vitamins, vitamin A and selenium), excessive carbohydrates, low protein diet, low calorie diets all negatively affect thyroid function, infections: pathogenic viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, GI dysfunction: hypochlorhydria, gut dysbiosis, SIBO/SIFO, parasites and leaky gut syndrome with associated inflammation and micronutrient deficiencies, genetics: (e.g. SNPs affecting vitamin A metabolism and genes causing defects in thyroid hormone synthesis), prescription medications: (e.g. PPIs, OCPs), adrenal dysfunction: stress, trauma and elevated cortisol, sex hormone imbalance: (e.g. excessive estrogen), inflammation: obesity and other chronic diseases. Hello! In this episode I continue to address a patient case regarding a middle aged woman with concerns about low thyroid function despite normal laboratory testing. Specifically, I address the reliability of the TSH as a biomarker to diagnose hypothyroidism. "I'm 35 and have lots of symptoms of hypothyroidism (I've gained 25 pounds in the last 3 years despite exercising and eating less, I'm always wearing a sweater, even in the summertime, my feet and hands are cold, my hair is falling out, my nails are brittle and I am so tired by 3 o'clock every day. I fall asleep every day after dinner and don't have enough energy to be the wife and mom I want to be. My gut is also a mess. I get bloated after eating and am constipated. My mom and older sister have hypothyroidism, but my doctor says my labs look fine. How can this be? Can the TSH be wrong? I've heard that it might not be reliable. What can I do to feel better? In this episode we cover 5 of the common Brain ANTs that can pull us into the dark pit of depression and despair: All-or-Nothing Thinking—Looking at things in black or white categories. If you fall short of perfection, you tell yourself that you’re a complete failure. This distorted thinking can quickly escalate a minor problem to a full-scale catastrophe in your mind: “I failed this test so I’ll probably fail this class and have to drop out of school, won’t find a job and end up homeless living on the streets.”Overgeneralization—You see a painful and undesirable event—such as divorce, bankruptcy or failure to accomplish a specific goal—as a never-ending pattern of defeat. Here are two examples of this common cognitive distortion: “nobody likes me” and “I always ruin everything.”Mental Filtering—Magnifying a flaw, shortcoming or problem, and seeing it as a reflection of your entire self.Discounting the Positive—An even bigger lie is when you believe that your good qualities or achievements don’t matter, maintaining the false belief that you’re defective or a total failure.Jumping to Conclusions—This brain ANT involves making dire negative predictions about your future that aren’t supported by the facts. When you’re under stress or suffering with anxiety or depression this tends to happen a lot. You tell yourself that you’re situation is hopeless, you’ll be miserable forever or even that life isn’t worth living. We also jump to conclusions about what others are thinking about us. How often do you assume someone is mad at you or offended by you without even speaking to them and verifying your suspicions? You’d be surprised how often your worries are not based in reality. Most of the time people are busy dealing with their own problems and lives and their behavior really has nothing to do with you.
